Paul Erdmann Isert (1756 – 21 January 1789) was a German botanist. Isert was born in Angermünde, Brandenburg, however educated in Berlin. He was the primary scientist to determine the chook Red Bishop (Euplectes orix franciscana (Isert)’. He can also be identified for his makes an attempt to finish the Danish-Norwegian slave commerce.

He was appointed as chief surgeon to the Danish establishments on the Guinea Coast. In 1786 he sailed to the West Indies with a cargo of slaves, who revolted. Appointed chief surgeon at Christiansborg, capital of the Danish Gold Coast (present day Accra, Ghana), he travelled to Africa in 1783.
